History
The development of the steam engine and auxiliary power in the nineteenth
century
helped to revolutionize navigation and naval warfare.
However, paddle machinery was vulnerable to enemy fire
and took up so much space formerly given over to guns that it was more of
a liability than an asset.
The widespread adoption of screw propulsion in the 1840s made steam
warships a more realistic alternative to windships.
Jylland (Jutland) was built for the Danish Navy in 1860.
Initially sailed as a cadet-training ship, on May 9, 1863,
she was severely damaged in the Battle of Helgoland between a Danish fleet
under Admiral Edouard Suenson and an Austro-Prussian force under
Admiral Wilhelm von Tegetthoff.
Hostilities had begun after King Christian IX attempted to formally annex
the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein
—historically Danish but with a large German population— into Denmark.
On the pretext of enforcing the Treaty of London of 1852, which forbade
any such annexation,
Prussia's Chancellor Otto von Bismarck —with an Austrian alliance—
forced the Danes to back down in 1864.
Denmark, which
surrendered the two duchies only to see them annexed by Prussia after the
Austro-Prussian War of 1866,
remained at peace through the end of the nineteenth century.
Jylland's role was largely one of showing the flag,
mostly in European waters but also in the Danish West Indies (now the U.S.
Virgin Islands).
From 1892 to 1908, Jylland
was used as a stationary barracks and training ship.
In the latter year, the
government decided to save the ship as a museum,
although she was used as a barracks during and just after both world wars.
The last survivor from the era of wooden-hulled,
screw-driven warships has been undergoing restoration in a permanent dry
dock at Ebeltoft since 1984. |
